Our Lecturers

Currently our lecturers are teaching on a part-time basis. Our Lecturer-Student Ratio is about 1 : 20. Below are our lecturers' profile.

Andrea Mayrhofer

Registered Senior Psychotherapist
M.Ed, B.Sc Psy(H), Grad. Dip SFT, CCPC

Andrea Mayrhofer is a registered psychotherapist and educational consultant with 25 years of teaching and counselling experience, presently pursuing her PhD in clinical psychology. She has worked with multicultural clients of all age groups in Germany, the U.S., Malaysia, Indonesia and currently, Singapore in private practice as well as with companies.

She specializes in crisis intervention, trauma therapy and grief counselling, using a solution-focused approach. Andrea also conducts regular psycho-educational workshops for parents and educators, public talks and provides psychiatric consultation for individuals (and their families) with traumatic backgrounds besides lecturing at several institutions. In addition, she conducts psychological screening and therapy supervision for students who are enrolled in Psychology/Counselling courses.

Andrea has trained numerous counsellors in Singapore who came from organizations such as NIE, MUIS, PA and MCYS besides providing consultation for companies such as HDB and Media Corps.

Besides people, she enjoys travelling, the outdoors, especially mountain climbing and skiing in the Alps, swimming, reading and lately her first grandson who happens to live only a few minutes away.

Anne Lyle

Whilst having rich experience and knowledge in teaching in mainstream schools, small classes and one-to-one tutorials in UK and Singapore, Anne Lyle is also highly qualified and competent in conducting assessments and supporting students of all ages who are facing literacy issues. Her support in Math at primary level, and mentoring and development of study skills for secondary level students are two of the many examples.

Currently, Anne is the Senior Education Therapist and Education Coordinator at Edunamics Therapy Centre. She earns qualifications, ranging from Certificate to Masters in Education with specialisations in Special Education and Psychology. Anne has also been awarded the RSA Diploma for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties.

Bimal Rai

Bimal Rai is an Educational Psychologist in private practice and has worked with children with special needs for over fifteen years. After attaining his Masters in Applied Psychology, he joined K.K. Hospital, Child Development Unit (CDU), and received extensive training as a psychologist. He was involved in program development and assisted in the implementation of new programs at CDU.

Bimal strongly believes in the benefits of public education. To this end he has delivered presentations at conferences in the region; conducted teacher/student training; and given talks to the public. He is a lecturer with the College of Allied Educators where he lectures on Autism, ADHD, Child Psychology and the various intervention strategies available. Due to his extensive field experience Bimal is able to bring theory to life as he shares with students his knowledge and expertise.

Currently Bimal runs his own practice, REACh Therapy Services. At REACh he provides psychological services for children with special needs, in particular autism, and behaviour management issues. By taking an educational/developmental approach to intervention, he is able to educate families so they better understand the difficulties their child faces and how to manage them. It has been meaningful for him to see family's develop closer relationships with their child while still remediating the core issues, especially where autism is concerned.

Bimal is a Member of the Singapore Psychological Society, and is a Supervisor for trainees both locally and overseas.

Laurence Ho

Laurence Ho holds a Bachelor of Business and a Master's of Arts in Applied Psychology with the Nanyang Technological University and a Graduate Diploma in Solution Focused Brief Therapy with the Brief family Therapy Center (Milwaukee, U.S.A) and a Diploma in Supervision for practitioners with the Welsh Psychotherapy Partnership. Laurence is a Registered Psychologist, Registered Counsellor and an Approved Clinical Supervisor with the Singapore Psychological Society and the Association for Counselling respectively. He is also a Certified Solution Focused Therapist and Approved Solution Focused Supervisor with the Canadian Council of Professional Certification.

Laurence has been in the counselling profession for over 10 years. His last held position was the Senior Counsellor position in a family service centre. Currently, he is working as a Counselling Psychologist in private practice. He is also an adjunct lecturer, supervisor and trainer. Besides having experience counselling a wide range of clientele such as children, adolescents, marital and family cases, Laurence also provides clinical supervision to fellow counsellors to sharpen their counselling skills. He also has experience providing counselling and other school based interventions to students from secondary schools and a tertiary institution.

Henry Tan

Henry obtained his Masters in Social Science (Counselling) in 2004 with University of South Australia and a Diploma in Counselling Practice in 2007 with Counselling and Care Centre (Singapore). He is also certified to conduct temperament instrument assessments such as DISC and TJTA (Taylor Johnson Temperament Analysis).

M. Prakalathan Kelaver (Prakash)

Prakash is an adjunct lecturer and principal of Saint Clare School for Special Education. He has more than seventeen years of experience in both education of children, consultation and training of teachers in the area of Special Education.

Prakash specializes in the area of Remedial Education, Learning Disabilities and in providing early intervention in children with various disabilities / learning differences such as Autism, ADD / ADHD, Dyslexia and other Behaviour Disorders. He holds a Master's in Special Education from University of Central Oklahoma.

Melvyn Chew

A graduate from the Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore in 1988, Melvyn Chew was called to the Singapore Bar the following year where he started legal practice till date. He also lectures on an adjunct basis at various educational institutions such as National Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore, as well as Nanyang Polytechnics, and National Institute of Education. Melvyn was named SMU’s Most Outstanding Adjunct in the School of Law in 2008.

Besides teaching, Melvyn finds interest widely in linguistics, drama, oral communications and writing. Dramatic Skills, Voice Production, Speech, Phonetics and Public Speaking are some of the subjects taught. Melvyn is also active in oral communication productions such as news reading, voiced TV newsreels, TV commercials, corporate videos, and Listening Comprehension Examinations at National Level. In addition, he has appeared in dramas and stage plays as well.

Patrice Lee

Patrice Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She has her Master's in Counselling from Monash University and a graduate diploma in Parent Education Leadership Training awarded jointly from Swinburne University, Australia and Family Resource Training Centre, Singapore. She is a member (professional) of the Australian Counselling Association and the American Counseling Association, and Singapore Association of Counselors.

Although an American, Patrice has been residing in Singapore for the past 22 years. She and her husband have conducted numerous work/life balance, marriage and parenting, sexuality education and smoking awareness seminars and counselling workshops throughout Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and Japan. Along with this, for the past eight years she has done individual and family counselling in the local schools and community. She has three wonderful teenagers.

(Dr.) Philip Chang

Dr. Philip Chang is currently practising as a family therapist. He has a Master's in Social Science (Counselling) awarded by the University of South Australia, and achieved his doctorate in Humanities from Sheffield University. He is certified in Satir's Systemic Transformational Therapy Mode and in Gambling Addiction counselling. He is also trained in Family Violence counselling and is certified as a Behavioural Consultant in the use of DISC, MBTI and Taylor Johnson Personality Traits instruments. Being trained in EQ with Lifeskills enables his active participation in the promotion of EQ.

Philip has a private counselling practice under Lifescripts Resources and collaborates closely with the Centre for Fathering, working with families, divorce, incarcerations and addiction recovery. Recent years saw his engagement with teen issues where he conducts the "Step Up" programme with Temasek Primary School. He also lectures on a part-time basis in various institutions and contributes regularly to the Centre for Fathering's e-newsletter, "Fathering Matters".

Philip is also a fully certified ACTA trainer by the Workforce Development Agency of Singapore, and conducts trainings at Sigma Solutions and Housing Development Board.

Renu Kumar

Head, School of Counselling and Psychology
College of Allied Educators, Singapore

Specialising in areas such as counselling and community services, Renu Kumar is holding related positions such as counsellor and facilitator in organisations including, Novena Medical Centre, We Care Community Services and SINDA Singapore. She has also gained valuable experiences from her work as an addiction counsellor and counsellor in a leading treatment facility, and in a Salvation Army’s domestic refuge in Sydney Australia respectively. Not only does she work with adults and teenagers, but also supports children who are facing domestic violence and dual disorders through assessments and therapies such as play therapy. Renu has hence received several commendations with her active volunteering in various community welfare groups.

In addition, Renu has also completed several courses with subjects such as Addiction, Domestic Violence and Welfare Work. She is also a Board Member in Asia Pacific Certification Board (APCB), an organisation which certifies and trains counsellors in the area of addiction in the Asia Pacific Region.

Richard Lim

Managing Director, The Relational

Richard Lim is a professional Psychotherapist in private practice and a Training Consultant with more than 15 years of related work experience. He specializes in Psychodynamic and Relationship Psychology for application in clinical work with individuals and couples, and in business communication and relations.

Sunita Rai

Sunita has a strong passion for her work and is always full of zest for life. Her dedication to helping others propelled her to switch her career from a Marketing Manager in an MNC to a Psychotherapist. She has a total of over 16 years of experience in local and international marketing, counselling, social services, education and training.

Currently, besides providing counselling and life coaching, she lectures teenagers at the local polytechnics and adults at various local and overseas institutions. The areas of her specialisation are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, Reality Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, Couple and Family Counselling, Group Therapy and Counselling Children Methodologies. Her counselling experience covers a wide spectrum of individuals that includes children, teens, couples and families from schools, counselling centres, family service centres and children’s home. She volunteers her services as a spiritual teacher, trainer and counsellor with The Hindu Centre and Singapore Prisons. Amongst her recent achievements, is developing an entire spiritual cum psychological model of therapy for rehabilitation for incarcerated teens and adults. She has recently trained a batch of spiritual counsellors and is currently guiding them in their journey to help others.

One of her strengths is the ability to synthesize various theories and applying it in practice. This has made a great difference to people from all walks of life as they have found it effective yet simple. Moreover, her ability to appreciate cultural diversity and to adapt to different contexts is a great value-add to her students and clients. Her strong analytical and organizational skills have enabled her to be effective in her area of work. She balances her objectivity with a keen sense of sensitivity to people’s cognitive and emotional needs.

Vasudavan Govindasamy (Vasu)

Vasu graduated from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and a Master of Science in Speech-language Pathology under the scholarship of the National Council of Social Services (NCSS). He is the clinical director at Communication for Life.

An ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist, Vasu has also earned ASHA's Certificate in Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP), the highest preparation for the profession.

His clinical services include clinic-based treatment focusing on children with speech delay, motor-speech disorders, various paediatric oral-sensory motor and feeding/ swallowing problems, genetic syndromes/chromosomal disorders, craniofacial disorders, autism, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, hearing auditory /language processing deficits (APD), dysarthrias, dyslexia, and ADHD.

Vasu is also the only certified Speech-language Pathologist in Singapore who is also trained as an Auditory-verbal Therapist (AVT) under the renowned International AV Consultant, Ms Judith Simser to work on the rehabilitation of patients with Cochlear Implantation.

Presently, besides his practice, Vasu teaches speech and language disorders at academic institutions. He is also the consultant at OVSPRING Pte Ltd- a developmental clinic in assessing and treating children with various kinds of disabilities. He is currently the head-therapist at St. Gerard's School. He also works with the National University of Singapore's speech and language pathology programme as a clinical supervisor.

He frequently conducts workshops and conferences locally and in the regional countries. The recent workshops were held in Singapore and Surabaya, “Understanding & Working with children who are Non-verbal and Minimally-verbal. He also serves the local and international communities in Singapore, and continues to provide training and consultation around the Asia Pacific region on a regular basis.

Vasu is conversant in English, Malay, Bahasa Indonesia, Tamil and Sign language. He is married with two children.

Yang Suyi

As a certified Occupation Therapist, Yang Suyi serves in various health and medical institutions such as National University Hospital, Royal Hospital for the Sick Children (UK), Aloka Meditation Centre (Australia), KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and Institute of Mental Health. Her duties allocate her to see to patients with issues such as ligaments strain, fractures, and traumatic head injury. Suyi also assesses and implements occupational therapy to children with developmental issues such as developmental delay, autism, ADHD, and dysfunction in sensory integration.

With great professional interests in theory application, education, mental health practice and paediatrics practice, Suyi often attends related courses and workshops to widen her perspective. She earns a Bachelor in Science (First Class Honours) in Occupational Therapy and Psychology, and also a certification in Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, amongst her many academic and clinical awards.
